Who we are
Empowering youth through the transformative power of drumming, culture, and mentorship.
DrumLoveDrumSoundDrumPeople was founded on January 3, 2013 by Kwaku O. Payton, prominent djembe drummer and community activist. Concerned with the cultural exploitation of younger generations, Kwaku, at a young age decided to make a constant effort to increase pride and self worth, especially in the face of prejudice and discrimination. Using the power of music, the language of the world, DrumLoveDrumSoundDrumPeople connects global communities in their appreciation of drums and the people who create life experiences through music.

Kwaku O. Payton
Kwaku O. Payton was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. The oldest of his household siblings, Kwaku grew up in a traditional Akan household. As an integral part of his traditional Ghanaian cultural and religious practices, drumming and dancing quickly became a daily practice for him. Heavily influenced by the Dinizulu African Dance and Drummers and Singers, as well as the teachings of Kamati Dinizulu, he worked tirelessly to master the art of drumming. Later, he would study the Guinean technique and form of the djembe including sound, posture, and stamina. Over the span of his career he has displayed his talent and shared his skill in countless performances including Dance Afrika, university performances at Rutgers, Hofstra, LIU, Harvard, and York College, Off Broadway Shows, and has been featured on a percussion cd. He continues to believe that art changes the world one person at a time and tirelessly works to use drum culture to build unity, equality, and shared experience across diverse bodies of people. Through partnerships, workshops, and performances it is always his goal to express his personal creativity and music while sharing his knowledge of different cultures of the world through art and education.
