Description
The drum has played a key role in dance, music, and song across cultures for centuries. It is the objective of this educational experience to present the history, function, and use of the traditional African drums including the Djembe and Dun Dun. Key elements of the traditional African drum, music, song, and dance will be investigated and applied through reading exercises, discussions, collaborative work, assignments, and videos. Research shows there is a strong correlation between the arts and academic and social development of students. These combined interactions of art and education will support the academic and social growth of its participants.

Goals and Objectives
- Students will complete the following objectives in a 45 minute time frame:
- Define the uses and purposes of a djembe drum
- Discuss the origin and history of the djembe drum
- Name the parts of the djembe drum and discuss the structure, sound, and materials of the drum
- Demonstrate and present basic techniques of drumming as reflected in sound and performance
