  • White families possess $95,000 more in assets compared to the average Black family, even when comparing middle-class Whites to high-income Black families.
  • 72% of Black mothers are unwed, although this does not necessarily mean the father is not involved.
  • Nearly half of African American students attend high schools in low-income areas, with dropout rates between 40-50%.
  • Fewer than half of enrolled African American students graduate from university within four years.
  • 24.7% of African Americans live in poverty, compared to 8.6% of Whites, 11.8% of Asian Americans, and 23.2% of Hispanics.
  • Black women and men have higher incidences of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease, with a higher likelihood of dying from stroke before age 74.
  • The diagnosis rate of HIV for Black women is 19 times higher than that of Whites and 4 times higher than Hispanics.

  • Participants will demonstrate the ability to use physical health knowledge, skills, and techniques to enhance wellness.

Emotional Wealth

  • Participants will demonstrate the ability to use emotional health knowledge, skills, and strategies to enhance wellness.

Mental Security

  • Participants will demonstrate the ability to use mental knowledge, skills, and strategies to enhance wellness.

Comprehensive Program Schedule Participants will progress through various skill levels while learning the techniques of the djembe drum and participating in character-building activities to support character education.

Time Frame

  • School Year 2015-2016, 2-4 days a week

  • Specific procedures will be developed based on individual sites and programs.

  • Ongoing process from the start of the partnership with appropriate monitoring.
